ASC in Brief

PT Asahimas Chemical, a multinational company headquartered in Jakarta, was established in 1986. Operations at its fully integrated state-of-the-art production complex in Cilegon, West Java, began in 1989 after an inauguration ceremony officiated by President Soeharto. Subsequent plant expansion programs have substantially increased production capacities and investment now totals US $ 500 million. Today, ASC operates Southeast Asia’s largest integrated Chlor Alkali-Vinyl Chloride Plant.

ASC manufactures basic chemicals utilized by a host of downstream industries: Caustic Soda (NaOH), Ethylene Dichloride (EDC), Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and Sodium Hypochlorite (NaClO). These products are crucial to many of Indonesia’s fastest-growing industrial sectors.

Shares in ASC are held by the Indonesian firms and by overseas firms name Asahi Glass Company and Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan.

A Fully Integrated Production Complex Three interdependent plants at ASC’s 90-hectare Cilegon complex are operated by a Distributed Control System which ensures production efficiency while maintaning high
environmental standards and ensuring safety.

In the first plan, Caustic Soda is manufactured. Derivative products include Chlorine Gas, Hydrogen, Hydrochloric Acid Solution and Sodium Hypochlorite Solution.

The second plant produces Vinyl Chloride Monomer as a raw material for use in PVC production. Chlorine Gas generated in the Chlor-Alkali plant is reacted with Ethylene to produce Ethylene Dichloride, which is then further cracked into VCM. The output of the complex’ third plant is Polyvinyl Chloride. In this stage, VCM is polimerized into PVC.

Rigid Quality Control And Safety Standards ASC’s extensive Cilegon complex operates with the latest and most advanced production technologies. The plants are also equipped with superior facilities for waste water treatment and the eliminations of gas pollutants. Every step in the production process is rigorously monitored to avoid any adverse impact on surrounding communities and the natural environment.

1. CAUSTIC SODA (NaOH)

USES OF CAUSTIC SODA: Caustic soda has a host of different uses. Its major markets are the rayon, textiles, soap/detergent, chemical, pulp and paper industries, but considerable quantities of caustic soda are used to produce monosodium glutamate, and aluminum. All persons who handle caustic soda should be familiar with proper first aid procedures.

2. POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC) RESIN

ASNYL PVC resin is the trade name of polyvinyl chloride resin produced by a ASC. This PVC resin is produced in a suspension polymerization process under the modern technology from Japan. These excellent suspension polymerization resins can be applied in a wide range of processing, such as calendaring, vacuum forming, extrusion, injection, blow molding, etc.

3. HYDROCHLORIC ACID (HCl)

Uses of hydrochloric acid: Hydrochloric acid is used by a wide range of industries. Its markets cover monosodium glutamate, zinc chloride, galvanizing, chemical, oil drilling, and water treatment industries.

SHIPPING: Hydrochloric acid is shipped from ASC manufacturing plant by rubber lining tank trucks with a capacity of 10,000; 13,500; 20,000 and 28,000 kgs.

4. SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE (NaClO)

USES OF SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE: Sodium hypochlorite is produced from the reaction of Cl2 with NaOH through absorption of Cl2 gas by NaOH solution. Sodium hypochlorite is used as bleaching and disinfectant agent. Its major markets are rayon, textile, water treatment and pulp & paper industries.

STORING AND DELIVERY: ASC’s storage tanks are completed with cooler facility. Cool storage tanks with water spray to prevent decomposition and minimize the evolution of Chlorine. Sodium hypochlorite is shipped from ASC manufacturing plant by rubber lining tank trucks with a capacity of 10,000kgs, 18,000kgs and 24,000 kgs.

SAMPLE AND SERVICES: Sodium hypochlorite sample in a plastic bottle can be obtained on request. ASC Technical Service and Sales staff will provide detail information on how to handle, store and using of NaClO.

The Chlor-Alkali Production Process

In ASC’s Chlor-Alkali plant, raw salt is dissolved in water and further purified. The high-purity salt solution is then electrolyzed to produced Caustic Soda, Chlorine Gas and Hydrogen. A sizable portion of the Chlorine is consumed in the production of EDC.

In this ASC plant, Ion-Exchange Membrane technology developed by Asahi Glass of Japan is utilized. The
benefits of this particular technology include superior product quality, relatively low levels of energy consumption and a lessening of pollutions problems.

The EDC/VCM Process And The PVC Process

Chlorine from the Chlor-Alkali plant is reacted with Ethylene to produce Ethylene Dichloride and further cracked to form Vinyl Chloride Monomer and Hydrochloric Acid. The block diagram shows how the Direct Chlorination Process and the Oxy-Chlorination Process are combined in the so called Ballanced Ethylene Chlorination Oxy-Chlorination Process.

As the block program indicates, the PVC Process can be divided into the three stages: Polymerization, VCM
Stripping and Product Drying. Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) is polimerized in a batch reactor.

A Rapidly Growing Domestic And Overseas Market

Global demand for the basic chemicals manufactured by ASC continues to grow. Demand for the company’s range of PVC products is forecasted to increase continuosly, while demand for its Caustic Soda is likely to increase constantly. Nearly all of the company’s production of Caustic is consumed domestically.

At present, a considerable percentage of ASC’s Polyvinyl Chloride output is being shipped to customers in Southeast Asian and Far East Asian countries. That percentage is expected to grow during coming years.
